Day 1 of the Wyoming State Wrestling Championships are completed. Day 2 is where teams begin wrestlebacks and try and climb the standings and individuals try and extend their tournament or advance into the placing matches.

For Star Valley teams, the Lady Braves are out in front after the first day with 81 team points. Green River is second with 54 and Powell is third with 43.5.

The Lady Braves had five athletes punch their ticket to the semifinal round on Friday night. Carlee Angell (105), Oakley Hepworth (130), Remington Aullman (135), Cara Andrews (145) and Brooke Schwab (170) will wrestle at the end of Day 2 to try and make the finals.

Coach Jeff Anderson commented on the first day of the tournament.

“I felt like as a team we had a fun day and wrestled confidently,” he said. “Our girls were excited to showcase their abilities and don’t give too much importance to records and team placing. That way they can wrestle free and without doubt. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to do that but when we master ourselves we [perform] so much better. The state event carries so many emotions but we’ve trained our mental and physical selves all season to handle the big lights and tough opponents. I’m so happy to see our crowd take up a whole section of the bleachers and the girls love to perform for them.”

For the Braves, they are fifth after the first day with 72 team points. Defending champion Thunder Basin is leading the 4A classification with 110. Green River is second with 83.5 and Cheyenne East is close behind with 82.

The Star Valley boys had six grapplers advance into Friday night’s semifinal round with Cooper Sessions (113), Caleb Lawrence (120), Kimball Parry (132), Tel Parry (144), Kolbe Merritt (150) and Eli Matautia (215) earning that opportunity.
