An Arizona man has been sentenced to 2-5 years in prison for causing a head-on collision near Grover last summer that resulted in the death of a horse. Stewart Scott Jones had previously pleaded guilty to Felony Property Destruction and Driving While Under the Influence. The sentencing took place at the Lincoln County Courthouse in Kemmerer on Thursday, March 19.

The incident occurred at roughly 6:45 p.m. on June 20, 2025 on Highway 89 at mile marker 91, just west of Grover. Jones, who was in Star Valley for construction work, was reportedly driving a gray Ford pickup when he failed to maintain his lane and crossed the center line, colliding with a white Ford pickup pulling a horse trailer. After the collision two other vehicles were also impacted in the accident.

According to original statements provided to SVI Media by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the crash tore the entire side off the horse trailer, causing one horse to be thrown from the trailer and then dragged to where the truck came to rest a ways off the road. The animal was dead when responders arrived on scene.

Following the accident Jones was given multiple citations including Driving Under the Influence. According to Lincoln County Attorney Spencer Allred, Jones had a blood alcohol level of .22 at the time of the crash, nearly triple the legal limit of .08.

In addition to jail time, Jones was also ordered to pay $69,628.85 in restitution to the owners of the horse, along with $675 in fees.
