• Town currently prohibits the use of fireworks
The Town of Alpine has been reviewing regulations on fireworks in preparation for the summer season of 2026.
Acknowledging that businesses in the area have already started preparing for firework sales this summer, the council also discussed concerns centered on the dry conditions in area forests.
“As we know in Lincoln County everyone loves to shoot their fireworks and we’ve been talking about it for six months off and on,” the mayor recalled on the SVI Weekday Wake-up program following a town council meeting on that included the topic in April.
He recalled the council conversation, “Do we want to pull back on the sale of fireworks, because typically the residents aren’t the ones that are buying the fireworks and setting them off. It’s the tourists and the people that are visiting.”
The mayor continued, “Obviously, a major forest fire is our biggest concern and that fireworks would start something and then it would be catastrophic,” he said. “So, the conversation has been, should we pull back on selling of fireworks?”
He said, “People will still, I’m sure, go shoot them off, even though it’s illegal to shoot them off in the town of Alpine, in the Bureau of Rec, in the forest, all those places it’s illegal to shoot off fireworks, but it still happens. The enforcement obviously is the difficult thing.”
Leading up to this summer season, the mayor said residents have offered little comment but the town is hearing from visitors making their summer plans.
“We really haven’t had much push-back from the residents,” he noted. “We’ve got a lot of people that emailed in saying, we travel to the town of Alpine around the 4th of July and it just wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t able to shoot off our fireworks.”
He said the discussion will continue as the town considers regulations in the future.
The sale of fireworks is currently permitted in the Town.
There are two current ordinances that mention the discharge of fireworks. One allows fireworks on the day before July 4th, the 4th, and the day after the 4th. An older ordinance only allows them at New Years.
“If anyone has more comment, they’re welcome to reach out to the town of Alpine as we continue to discuss this.” The mayor concluded.
