SVI Radio Interview: Mayor Devin Simpson – Town of Thayne America 250 Events

Town of Thayne Mayor Devin Simpson called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Tuesday, June 30 to discuss the town’s 4th of July schedule of events for America 250.

(0:00) Joining me now live over the phone is Town of Thane Mayor Devin Simpson here on The Weekday (0:06) Wake Up to talk about what’s happening in the Town of Thane this weekend for America 250 and (0:10) anything else of note taking place in the Town of Thane as well. Mayor Simpson, good morning, (0:15) how are you doing today? Good morning, Duke. Thanks for having me on.

I’m doing well. Hey, (0:20) absolutely. You know, first off out of the gates, of course, us at SBI got to give our appreciation (0:25) to the Town of Thane.

You guys are so good to work with to host our SBI Day this Friday. (0:31) There’s a reason we go to Thane. We love the Town of Thane.

We love working with the mayor (0:35) and the council and the town staff. It’s fantastic. And so thanks for being so accommodating.

We’re (0:40) looking forward to it on Friday. No, the thank you goes out to you. We’re super excited to have (0:46) you guys.

When you guys reached out to us, we couldn’t think of a better fitting way to celebrate (0:51) the 250th with this amazing day that’s going to happen on Friday. We’re super excited to the (0:56) town. Absolutely.

So, of course, SBI has everything taking place on Friday with the things at the (1:01) park and concessions and all of it going on Friday. So let’s talk about the Fourth of July (1:07) Day itself and what’s happening in the Town of Thane. Start off with that 5K Fun Run Saturday (1:12) morning.

Yeah, Sunrise Engineering sponsoring our 5K Fun Run. It’s open to everybody. It’s (1:18) bright and early at six o’clock in the morning.

We don’t require registration. We just invite (1:24) everybody to come run, get their exercise in, and then as soon as you get done running, we (1:28) invite you over to our annual fireman’s breakfast there at seven o’clock to 830 in the morning right (1:34) there at the park. We can’t appreciate our firemen enough.

Mid Valley Fire and Thane Fire Department, (1:40) they just do a tremendous job. They are the backbone of our community and provide such a (1:46) good service to all of us. This is an opportunity we have to thank them for their service and to (1:50) enjoy a wonderful morning of flag raising ceremony and celebrate our freedom and our touch of this (1:56) country that we have.

So it’s a great, great event there. Absolutely. Fireman’s breakfast (2:00) seven to 830 a.m. in Thane.

And then, of course, after that, the historic Town of Thane Fourth of (2:07) July Parade. Yeah, you know, I couldn’t be more excited for this year’s parade. I highly anticipate (2:15) that this will probably be our biggest parade ever, both in participants in the parade with (2:20) floats and different things there, the local businesses and communities and just individuals (2:25) too.

But I also anticipate we’ll all be the largest crowd that we’ll ever have in the Town of Thane (2:30) as well. So such a wonderful opportunity. We always have to remember our firemen do an amazing job of (2:36) making sure we all stay cool on that day.

But for those who do not want to stay cool, maybe there’s (2:41) water-free zone from Osmond Street to Dana Street on both sides of the road there. (2:45) But just the parade is such a fun experience, such a unique experience that we get to put on (2:50) as a town to have that many people come. It’s just overwhelming to see the support and love that (2:55) people have to the Town of Thane.

You know, you talk about the participation in this. It’s always (2:59) well-participated, like you said, both those who are in the parade and those watching. And (3:03) no registration required, right? I mean, anybody could just decorate whatever they want and go line (3:08) up that morning on Saturday.

Yeah, they can line up any time. They start from 8 to 9 is the judging. (3:14) So if you want to be judged and potentially receive one of our awards, you need to be during (3:20) that time frame.

But we don’t allow anybody to come because we know there’s some people who even (3:23) wake up that morning and say, hey, let’s do this. And so we don’t want to discourage anybody from (3:27) being part of our parade. So we don’t have to require any registration.

Just come on down to (3:33) the big field off of Roberts Street and line up and just come enjoy and have fun and make this (3:39) an amazing parade. Town of Thane Mayor Devin Simpson this morning on the weekday wake up. (3:44) Thane has always had a firework show, and it sounds like because of America 250, you’re (3:49) expanding that this year and doing what’s called a pre-firework dance party.

Tell us what this is. (3:56) Yeah, you know, the Mid-Valley Fire District showed up and said, hey, we want to do something to (4:01) enhance this year’s activities. And part of this was they seen what was coming early this spring (4:07) when we didn’t have much snow and concern.

So there’s always a concern in the back of our (4:12) minds of are we going to be able to get fireworks off or not? And Mid-Valley said, hey, let’s do (4:16) this dance party. And they reached out to us and we said, absolutely, bring it on. We’ll put that (4:22) right in our community center parking lot.

They reached out to you, and I believe you’re coming (4:26) to DJ it, right, Duke? Well, I will be there with speakers and music, yes. (4:31) Yeah, so come on down. They’re going to just have some good music, enjoy it.

I think they’ve (4:36) got some food trucks there as well. And so just come down and enjoy it. And then at 10 o’clock, (4:41) right around 10 o’clock, they’re going to put on an amazing fireworks display.

They reached out (4:46) to me and informed me this will be their biggest and best fireworks display that they’ve ever done. (4:51) And so just a great way to celebrate the birth of our country and enjoy the freedoms (4:56) that we have here. It’s going to be an amazing day, and it looks like the weather is going to be (4:59) even better for us.

So it’s just going to be overall a very fun day. (5:03) Awesome. It all takes place July 3rd and 4th at the Town of Thayne for America 250.

Mayor (5:07) Devin Simpson with us on the Weekday Wake-Up. Mayor, anything else regarding the celebrations (5:12) this weekend you’d like to touch on? No, I just really need to extend special (5:17) thanks to all of our help at our town, our clerks, our maintenance men, and our summer help. (5:22) This is a very stressful week for them and for us, but they do an amazing job and it all comes (5:29) out really well.

You’re going to see a lot of very themed parts of our history of our country (5:35) throughout these events, the Tea Party and some unique things that’ll be happening in a parade. (5:41) But it all comes from ideas from them, and they’re just amazing in executing it. So I can’t (5:45) thank them enough for the work that they do.

It’s Town of Thayne Mayor Devin Simpson on the (5:49) Weekday Wake-Up. Well, Mayor Simpson, while we have you on the air, anything else happening (5:52) in the Town of Thayne that you’d like to highlight today that’s being worked on by (5:55) you and the Council or the Town staff? You know, things are quiet right now in the (6:00) town, which isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes that’s a good thing for us to catch up, (6:04) especially as we think about the 4th.

But no, not a lot going on in the town, which is good. (6:08) We’re working on a lot of little projects here and there, trying just to make this a better (6:12) place. We’ve got a pickleball court that hopefully will be finished up this summer.

But we just have (6:17) a lot of little projects trying to enhance the quality of life for our residents in this area. (6:21) Perfect. So join the Town of Thayne this upcoming weekend for America 250 SBI Day on July 3rd, (6:27) this Friday, beginning at 11.

And then, of course, on Saturday, the 5K Fun Run at 6, (6:32) Fireman Breakfast 7 to 830, Parade at 10, and the Pre-Firework Dance Party at 6 with fireworks (6:38) at 10. Mayor Simpson, thanks so much. We’ll see you this weekend.

(6:42) Thanks, Duke. Appreciate it. (6:43) Yep.

It’s all part of the Weekday Wake-Up this morning on SBI Radio.
