Bicycle traffic, EMS services, and water culverts were all part of Afton’s Town Council work sessions during June.
The town is addressing the changes with bicycle traffic, both in the community and at the municipal parks. The council recently approved an ordinance addressing e bikes and electric scooters use on the town sidewalks within town.
However, the council has called for further review. “There’s established regulations, however we had it pointed out that we didn’t have some clear guidance for our patrol officers or for the public.” Sanderson said of the ordinance.
She advised that further clarification was needed for community parks “We’ve had a long standing history of no power driven pieces of equipment throughout the parks.”
She added, “There’s been some question on e-bike versus electric motorcycles and what is permitted and isn’t.”
Sanderson said the matter was included as part of the June work session for the council. “They did provide some guidance to me that will come forth in the July council meeting to bring forth some regulation and ordinance work,” she said. “This will help define what is and is not going to be permitted in the parks. moving forward.”
EMS Services
“As far as the town of Afton, I think we sit in line with the rest of the municipalities throughout the northern Lincoln County,” Sanderson said of requests to assist with EMS services.
“The letter that went out from all the mayors spoke to the public on where the community is with the issue.” The letter was published in the Star Valley Independent and at svinews.com
Sanderson said Afton will continue working the other municipalities and Star Valley Health to address the EMS issues.
“We’ve been working for about a year and a half with a hospital working group, as leaders within these communities, to discuss issues,” she said. “I think, relayed that some of the information that we as community leaders want to see was not yet provided to us.”
She added, “And so, it was just a good reminder that we’re still waiting for that information before we can make some clear decisions on what is best to move forward and how the municipalities can help with this concern about EMS and how to sustain existing services or whether they need to change.”
Water culverts
The Town of Afton is reviewing the water culverts in the community following an incident with a child earlier in the summer. “As part of that work session, we’re doing some work in the town parks, the culverts, making sure there is some safeguards there,” Sanderson said. “There’s was some potential safety concerns brought to the town of Afton with an incident with a juvenile that fallen into the ditch near the culvert on Monroe Street that goes through the park.”
She advised, “We’re looking at more safe options than just an open flow culvert and seeing what capabilities we have as the Town of Afton to make some differences, make some changes there.”
