HEISE — The Big Rock Fire remained at about 2,500 acres Monday morning, after firefighters successfully held the fire lines surrounding the blaze. Many homes, cabins, and campgrounds have been saved by their heroic efforts.

Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire spokeswoman Juley Smith says despite unfavorable conditions, the fire perimeter held on Sunday night, keeping the active burning area at 2,482 acres.

“(Firefighters are) trying to hold and push forward to find hot spots,” Smith says.

Some 126 personnel continue to fight the flames as the western edge of the fire and the north hill near Kelly Canyon Resort continue to burn. The fire remains at 0% containment.

“The fire remains active in aspen and conifer pockets on the northeast flank, in Little Kelly Canyon, and on the west flank near the Cress Creek trail,” says a post by the U.S. Wildfire Service in Great Basin. “Crews continue to build and strengthen fire lines and monitor areas where containment is challenging. Firefighters will also continue to aggressively fight fire to protect homes and property to the extent possible.”

The weather on Monday is expected to be much milder than it was over the weekend, when conditions made it nearly impossible to keep the fire from worsening.

According to the National Weather Service, the area of Ririe near Heise Hot Springs and Kelly Canyon can expect a sunny day with a high around 80 degrees, and northwest wind around 8 mph.

Once the sun goes down, experts expect the temperature to drop dramatically to 49 degrees, with the wind turning southeast after midnight.

Only South Snake River Road residents/property owners may pass road closures to access and check properties. Roads remain closed to everyone else; please continue to avoid the area.

Heise, Kelly Canyon, Wolf Flats, and Table Rock remain closed. Follow responder instructions.

As of Saturday evening, the emergency evacuation shelter at South Fork Elementary School is closed.

Area Closures:

The Bureau of Land Management – Idaho has issued a temporary closure of BLM-managed lands, roads, campgrounds, and trails along the South Fork Canyon, including all river camping between Conant and Byington Boat Accesses, Kelly Island, Wolf Flats, Warm Springs, and all dispersed sites along River Road.

The Idaho Department of Lands has issued a temporary closure of the endowment lands in the Kelly Canyon block south of Moody Creek due to the Big Rock Fire. The Caribou Targhee National Forest has implemented an area closure associated with the Big Rock Fire.

This closure is in place to ensure both public safety and firefighter safety as crews continue to work in challenging conditions.
