MyChart warns of increased scammers

Users of MyChart are being asked to be extra cautious of authentic looking pages asking for more information.

The health records portal MyChart, which is utilized by Star Valley Health, is warning users of an uptick in scammers. In a press release, MyChart stated that the scammers try to “trick patients by using the MyChart name or logo to make emails, text messages, phone calls, and websites look official.”

“Some might try to steal your login information or promise free gifts if you enter payment details,” continued the statement. “The increase in attempts is due to scammers taking advantage of the popularity of the MyChart brand rather than any security concern, so you can continue to use MyChart as normal. If something doesn’t feel right, however, stop and check. The Staying Safe page on MyChart.org has a few simple habits that go a long way toward keeping you safe.”

Some residents in Star Valley have reported to have received a scam email. However, Star Valley Health reiterates that the platform remains secure and is safe to use, while advising residents to not give out any personal information over the phone or through email.

Epic, the company behind MyChart, said scammers are using fake websites that can look almost identical to the real thing. In one example, a phony MyChart site shows users fake medical results and then claims they need to complete a verification step. The instructions can actually tell people to press certain keys on their computer — a move that can allow malware to be installed. Some scam messages promise a free “Medicare kit” or other benefit, and ask for personal or payment information.

If a website that appears to be MyChart tells you to run a computer command, download a program to see your lab results, or override a security warning, you should stop. Epic said MyChart itself has not been compromised. The company said these attacks are using the MyChart name and brand to trick people, so patients can continue safely using the portal, but should be careful about how they access it.
