The pantry operates at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church on Pine Street every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. Visitors should enter through the Fellowship Hall door. No appointment is necessary, and other days or hours can be arranged upon request.

Organizer Carol Reed said the startup period has involved plenty of planning, discussion, and learning. It has also revealed a greater need in the community than anticipated.

“There are more people in need than I realized,” Reed said.

While new households are beginning to visit, spreading awareness remains a challenge. Another obstacle is the stigma some residents associate with receiving food assistance.

Reed said some people believe food banks serve only people who are poor or homeless. Her message is that everyone in need is welcome.

The pantry emphasizes confidentiality, including alternative visiting times for people who prefer more privacy.

“We strive to respect their identity,” Reed said. “Confidentiality is a must for anyone staffing the Food Bank.”

Church members have provided “tremendous support” through food and monetary donations, Reed said. Visitors most often request basic items, but the pantry welcomes a broad range of contributions.

Needed supplies include food, toiletries, baby supplies, pet food, cleaning products and paper goods. Monetary donations are also welcome.

Shelving, refrigerators, freezers, reusable bags, and storage bins could help support the pantry’s operations.

Gardeners, ranchers, stores, schools and businesses are encouraged to contribute. Donors can contact Reed to discuss items and arrange a time to meet at the church.

Reed said some donations may be left on the porch, and plans are underway to add a donation drop box.

Although volunteers are not currently needed, people interested in helping are welcome to contact the pantry.

For assistance, alternative visiting hours, or donation arrangements, contact Carol Reed at 307-723-1875 or Bonnie McAffee at 307-270-9311.

For anyone hesitant to visit, Reed emphasized that the pantry respects visitors’ privacy and welcomes everyone who needs help, with other visiting days or hours available when requested.
