TEXT-IN TOPIC RESPONSES: Colin Kaepernick with Nike Campaign

Nike is choosing former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the new face of its Just Do It campaign.  Kaepernick tweeted a photo of himself with the slogan “Believe in something.  Even if it means sacrificing everything.”  Kaepernick, who was the first player to kneel during the national anthem in protest against racism, is suing the league on accusations that teams are colluding to keep him off the field.

President Trump says Nike is sending a terrible message choosing Colin Kaepernick as the new face of its Just Do It ad campaign.  Trump told The Daily Caller Tuesday that maybe there’s a reason for Nike doing it, but as far as messages go it’s one that shouldn’t be sent.  Trump said that while he doesn’t agree with Nike’s decision, the freedom to make that choice is what the country is all about.  Trump has previously said players who kneel should be fired.

During the Weekday Wake-up Wednesday morning, Duke & Dahl asked listeners what their thoughts on the campaign were and if they would be less likely to purchase Nike products because of the companies use of Kaepernick on the campaign.  Here are the responses.

“Yes much less likely to buy Nike.  We say Yay Under Armor.”

“I 100% understand and applaud Colin Kappernick for taking such a public stand for racial injustice. Not many of us get the opportunity to reach such a big audience. However, I feel like his career was already going downhill and he didn’t give up everything. Not close. I feel like they could have used different slogan maybe like “just do it, even if you are doing it alone”..i don’t know something.”

“I was shocked and disgusted.”

“I would boycott Nike, but I have never been able to afford them in the first place! … Tillman would have been a better face!”

“I would just like to see Kapernick (and other NFL players) “sacrifice” their time in the off season workimg to bridge the gap between the police and those who are targeted with police brutality. It is easy to take a knee for 3 minutes during the national anthem of a televised event. But get up and really do something about police brutality, get out in the communities and work with troubled kids & teens….no matter what the skin color is!”

“Such a sad situation that shows how far off the advertising has become. The flag is such a representation of sacrifice for what we have here in the USA. Standing for the flag is an honor!”

“Glad I look cute in Pumas! I think it’s a slap in the face to every true American hero.”

“Nike must really believe in their choice because they might be the ones who just sacrificed everything. Bad Decision Nike.”

“Colin Kappernick knelt for our nations flag so we won’t support Nike.”

“I disagree with Nike and Kaepernick, I bought a pair of Reeboks for the first time yesterday”

“Colin Kaepernick, raised by two rich white people in a nice suburb is complaining about black issues? And then he gets a huge paycheck because of it? What has he sacrificed?”

“No more Nike purchases for me! Just won’t do it.”

“I won’t support Nike anymore. Poor choice on their part of selecting a spokesperson for this campaign.”

“If that’s the slogan then they should have put the face of a member of the armed forces. Not a spoiled has been.”

“Colin hasn’t sacrificed anything. He’s made over $25 million in his football career and we’re supposed to feel bad for him?  What a waste of space.”

“I purchase Nike items occasionally. This will make me less likely to make that purchase. I think they made a mistake with their choice.”

“Yes it bothers me!!!!! I’ve always been a Nike fan but certainly not a fan of anyone who disrespects the flag!!!!”

“I spent 20 years in the military protecting the flag and I think Nike should be boycotted till they get ride of Colin K.”

“Oh yeah, I’m bothered. I used to be all about Nike, but I will not support them anymore. Just don’t do it!”

  1. Nike will no longer be used in our house hold, Tried to support a US company but no more after the Kapernick BS. this isnt anything except putting cash in his pocket and I dont appreciate the disrespect to our country. You dont like it leave, because its so much better other places and there are so many opportunities there, RIGHT! Opportunities are you what you make of them, act like you belong and work hard and you have that opportunity here. The culture is what you make of it. I dont support the NFL, NIKE(now), and will continue to do so until attitudes change.
