Sporting clays has a long history that began in England in the early 1900s. The sport used to involve shooting at pigeons, but today the game utilizes clay targets instead. The sport is governed by the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA), which “has over 22,000 members in all 50 U.S. States and 10 foreign countries.” Here’s what sporting clay shooting is, what equipment you need, and where you can participate.

What Is it?

Played on a course with 10 to 15 shooting stations, sporting clays is very similar to golf, except that it’s played with a shotgun and clays instead of golf clubs and balls. According to the NSCA, the game is meant to simulate the hunting of animals as people try to shoot at the clays. Players can split into teams of two to six people.

What You Need

In order to begin sporting clays shooting, you’ll need a few things. Range365 suggests that you bring ear muffs, eye protection, a shell pouch or vest, range bag, gloves, a choke tube wrench, choke tubes, and a shell catcher. While sporting clays shooting is a fun activity, you still need to be cautious and safe in the process.

Where Do You Do It?

Sporting clays is typically played on open land.  Wyoming has many courses where you can try it. Make sure you follow the rules and the dress codes of the particular club where you are shooting.
