Kemmerer J.C. Penney store to stay open as company lists initial closures
A total of 154 stores will close in the first wave of activity after J.C. Penney declared bankruptcy on May 15.
Not on that list is the original Kemmerer, Wyoming store which has served as a cornerstone for the town over the past century. No Wyoming locations were on the list although more closures are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The closures are spread out across more than two dozen states with close-out sales in those stores expected to last anywhere from 10-16 weeks.
The closest locations slated to close are at the Cache Valley Mall in Logan, Utah and the Layton Hills Mall location in Layton, Utah.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” Chief Executive Jill Soltau said in a statement.
Penney, like the many retailers deemed nonessential, was forced to temporarily close its stores due to the coronavirus pandemic, pushing it over the brink as its sales took an enormous hit and its debt swelled.
At the time the company filed for Chapter-11 protection there were roughly 860 locations employing over 90,000 full and part-time workers.
