Police chase ends at Palisades

A police chase that began in the Snake River Canyon ended on a dry lake bed at Palisades Reservoir Wednesday afternoon.

An officer with the Wyoming Highway Patrol told SVI News that at 3:04 pm a deputy attempted to stop a female driver for a broken windshield at mile marker 136 on Highway 89, just south of Astoria Hot Springs. The driver refused to stop and a chase ensued through the canyon, reaching speeds of 75-80 miles per hour.

Spike strips were set up towards the mouth of the canyon near Alpine. The spikes successfully flattened the vehicle’s tires, but the driver still continued north of Alpine on U.S. 26 before turning off the highway and onto the lakebed of Palisades Reservoir, where the chase continued. Eventually a trooper was able to successfully ram into the vehicle while other patrol vehicles boxed in the driver’s car. The driver was then arrested at roughly 3:30 pm.

A loaded Ruger .22 pistol was found on the driver’s side floorboards of the vehicle. No drugs were found in the vehicle but officers did find paraphrenalia. The driver did have two outstanding warrants for her arrest, one in Lincoln County and one in Teton County.
