Bear Lake School District reminds community to stop for school busses

The Bear Lake School District #33 has issued a statement in response to what it says is an “increase in school bus stop-arm violations.”

“Please stop for the bus,” said Johnathan Hemmert, BLSD #33 Transportation director. “We just want the kids to be safe.”

The memo from the school district notes that Idaho state law states if a school bus is stopped with either yellow or red flashing lights, traffic in either direction must stop.

Hemmert noted a few incidences that have prompted the reminder. Earlier in the school year, a semi-truck tried to go around a stopped bus and nearly rear-ended it. Additionally, one particular bus stop on the highway has had four incidences of stop-arm violations so far this year. In the past, Hemmert said they haven’t seen more than two violations in that spot in an entire year.

Though state, county, and city law enforcement are working together to enforce the law, BLSD #33 urges the community to watch for school busses and help keep school kids to get home safely.

The full memo on bus stop violations can be found here.
