Races take place in Afton; banquet in Thayne.
The rise of COVID-19 affected many things in a negative way but for Star Valley one thing that was a net positive was the addition of the Cutter Racing World Championships moving to the area.
At one time the races took place in Ogden, Utah, but when the virus caused the state to pause, the event moved to Wyoming. This will be the second time the championship has been held in Star Valley.
The races begin at 12 noon this Saturday and Sunday at 1489 Allred Road, west of Afton. Cost for entrance at the gate is $10.
“We’ve got 16 teams registered to be coming to race for the Worlds Championship,” said event organizer Tomi White. “Friday night is a Meet-and-Greet at the Thayne Community Center at 6:30 with finger foods and passing out drivers bags and a Calcutta.”
There is no charge to attend the Meet-and-Greet.
Accompanying the races on Saturday and Sunday there will be food vendors as well as other attractions.
“We have a lot of other activities to help break things up,” White continued. “We have some amazing announcers and it will be a great time.”
The Championship Banquet will take place Saturday evening at the Thayne Community Center in preparation for Sunday’s Best of the Best races. Everyone is welcome to the banquet but there is a $15 charge for those age 16 and up.
White emphasized what a great addition the championships are to the local economy.
“We’ve got great sponsors,” she said. The hotels and restaurants and gas stations; it will be a big day for them as everybody that comes to the valley likes to see everything that is here.”
According to White, the awards ceremony will take place Sunday afternoon after the final race which will include three divisions with six placings in each division.
There are six local teams as part of the championships with others coming from Wyoming, Utah and Idaho.
