• Old material has been removed, holes prepped to stabilize Star.
The old material for the Star on the east hill above Afton has been removed with the help of 20 volunteers and a bulldozer provided by DNS Excavation.
The group worked at the site pulling up metal, boards, wiring and other material early in August, with the task changing to preparing holes in recent days to help stabilize the new Star slated for completion later in the fall.
Afton resident Paul Scherbel has been at the site overseeing the project.
“The next step is to dig 10-inch x 36-inch holes for the 20 concrete piers that support the legs,” explained Scherbel. “To date we have nine-and-half holes that have been dug.”
Electric power has already been laid to the Star.

In addition to the new Star, the trail leading to the site has been reconstructed with a project coordinated with the Bridger-Teton National Forest Greys River District Ranger’s Office. Parking for the trail is available at the entrance to Swift Creek Canyon.
