After years of positioning the area to host the Winter Games again since doing so in 2002, the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee was told by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that SLC was the preferred host for the 2034 gams but could also host the 2030 events if needed.
The committee also named the French Alps, France as the preferred host of the 2023 Winter Games during their meeting in Paris on Wednesday.
Salt Lake was one of four applicants trying to secure the Games in 2030 and 2034 but the history of previously hosting the games had a major advantage. According to Karl Stoss, the commission’s head, the IOC stated that they were impressed by the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee’s “very compact” master plan an how the city cost host the event with no significant optimal investment required. Many of the venues from the 2002 Winter Olympics have been kept viable and useful in the years since the game as opposed to many other Olympic venues across the world which have quickly falls into disrepair.
