According to driver reports to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, zero visibility combined with road conditions led to a three-vehicle accident on U.S. 89 at the base of the South River Summit on Friday afternoon.

At approximately 2 p.m., emergency personnel and law enforcement officials responded to a call of a four-car accident. According to Trooper Austin Willette, a Subaru was at least partially caught in a drift and was struck from behind by a Chevy pickup. A Toyota Highlander then struck the pickup from behind. Trooper Willette stated that while initial reports indicated a fourth vehicle, there was no damage consistent with the collision or an additional vehicle on scene to verify it.

“Drivers reported a full white-out,” Willette stated. “White-outs are tricky and perhaps someone was too close but you can’t see until it’s too late. The speed [at the time of collision] was pretty slow so no citations were issued.”

Although some passengers reported soreness after the accident, no serious injuries were reported.

Drivers are reminded to please turn lights on and slow down to help with visibility during poor conditions.
