A suspect is dead and a park ranger injured after a shooting at Yellowstone National Park on Thursday, July 4.
It started in the middle of the night at Canyon Village in the central part of the park, according to a news release from park officials.
Rangers responded to a report of an individual with a firearm who was making threats. When rangers contacted the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers. The suspect, who has been identified by the Park County Coroner as Samson Fussner, 28, of Florida, died in the exchange while a park ranger was injured. The extent of the ranger’s injuries are unknown, but officials said he is in stable condition and being treated at a nearby hospital.
Fussner was reportedly an employee of Yellowstone contractor Xanterra Travel Collection.
The incident remains an active investigation under the direction of the FBI.
