Two killed after being hit by train near Cokeville

Two people are dead after their car was hit by a train just south of Cokeville Sunday morning.

Captain Brian Andrews with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said that at roughly 11:15 a.m. several individuals decided to bypass a temporary road closure and detour on the railroad right-of-way when the vehicle became stuck on the tracks. “During the course of this family’s detour, their vehicle was struck by a north moving train while attempting to cross from the west side of the tracks to the east,” said Andrews.

Two individuals in the car were deceased when emergency responders arrived. Two additional people needed to be extricated from the vehicle. They were both taken to the Cokeville Airport where they were life-flighted to Utah, one to Ogden and the other to Salt Lake.

Andrews said the family involved in the crash were from California. Identities are currently being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
