Another try for a 25-percent property tax reduction

• Original bill was vetoed in ‘23.

The bill that called for a 25 percent cut in property taxes is back.

Senate File 54 designed to provide a 25-percent property tax exemption on the first $2 million in fair market value, will again be up for consideration in the Wyoming Legislature.

Based on the work of the Legislature’s Joint Revenue Committee, the bill will be heard in the 2025 winter session.

The same bill passed the Legislature in 2024 but was vetoed by the Governor.

The Revenue Committee brought it back in an 11-3 vote.

Efforts to bring the Legislature back into a special session to reconsider SF 54 and overide the Governor’s veto in the Spring of 2024 were unsuccessful, with the House opposing a special session, while the Senate approved the proposal.

Schools and local governments are tracking the property tax legislation as it affects the amount of money they receive in the state funding process.
