BLM to begin seal coating Egin Lakes Campground, Day use Area

Idaho Falls, Idaho — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Upper Snake Field Office will begin asphalt seal coating the Egin Lakes Campground/Day Use Area during the week of April 27, weather permitting. Recreation sites will remain open during this time but may result in a minor inconvenience to the public.

The Egin Lakes Campground is scheduled to open for overnight camping on May 8, depending on weather. The day use area has continued to remain open throughout the winter, but there is a possibility that the surface work could temporarily restrict access to both areas.

“We are asking the visitors for their cooperation during this needed work so the access road remains serviceable to the public,” said Jeremy Casterson, BLM Upper Snake Field Manager.

The BLM closes the campground seasonally to overnight camping as the weather gets colder and visitation decreases. The water system is shut off and winterized to prevent broken pipes due to freezing temperatures. The campground reopens annually in May as the weather warms up and visitation increases.

The white quartz sand dunes are the largest in Idaho and blanket an area approximately 35 miles long and 5 miles wide. This unique area sees over 250,000 visitors a year from around the world and offers an expansive outdoor playground for recreationists. It is also an important environment for a variety of plants and animals, providing critical winter range for elk, mule deer and moose.

In addition to the campground area, the Byington Boat Access along the South Fork River will also receive crack seal, seal coat, and striping. This work is scheduled for the same week and will temporarily prevent usage during that time. This BLM site features a concrete boat ramp and separate raft launch/takeout facilities.
