Frank Gambino joined Duke and Dahl this week to discuss his role at WyoPreps and his thoughts on the early dose of high school football action in the cowboy state. “I really really enjoy it I think [high school sports] is the last bastion of amateurism when it comes to sports” Frank said about his job transforming into a road warrior and traveling the state to watch all the happenings in high school sports, a seemingly tall order considering the vast state in which he calls home but Frank fully embraces and enjoys the task.
Part of Frank’s job includes the recording of scores and stats from every game from across the state and WyoPreps reputation as a very reputable source for these seems to have taken off, “You’d be amazed how many parents call in looking for stats for their kids because the coaches didn’t care of it” said Frank on the matter, adding “I mean like some of these parents are looking for scholarships for their kids” making very clear that the fine parents of Wyoming are merely keeping their kids best interests at heart and turning to WyoPreps is seen as the best way to accomplish that.
Frank’s first game of the season he was able to personally attend was the 1A 9-man action between the 2 top ranked teams in the state in Shoshoni and Pine Bluffs. “I mean wow that was really quite a game I mean Pine Bluffs is loaded”
Gambino was in awe as well at Pine Bluffs depth after losing 2 of their key players in the game they were still able to bounce back and defeat the number 1 ranked Shoshoni on the road in the game and leap frog them in the coaches and media poll rankings heading into the following week.
Frank also believes that 9-man may have another strong contender this season though as well, “The other team that’s really really good is Rocky Mountain I mean they’ve got talent all over the place”. So while last week’s contest between 1 and 2 may seem like the early preview of the state championship game in theory, Gambino believes things are not quite as cut and dry as the untrained eye may instinctively believe in the world of 9-man this year.
On the 4A end of things, Frank had a chance to check out Cheyenne East blow out Natrona and had some strong immediate reactions to Cheyenne East’s performance, “That Cheyenne East is gonna give Sheridan a run for their money, that Drew Jackson he had 100 yards rushing he had 2 rushing touchdowns he had an interception I mean he did everything”
Finally the biggest story of a week ago in 3A was Jackson upsetting Douglas who was ranked 3rd in the contest, which Frank Gambino believes may be an indication that Jackson’s defense may be much more stout than anyone thought coming into the year. Despite the many key seniors that were graduated and the loss of their head coach, Jackson has now won 2 in a row after losing their opening game to an out of state Teton opponent in week 0.
