Swift Creek Canyon remains closed on Saturday with no estimated opening time on when the canyon will reopen. The canyon, located east of Afton which leads to the Intermittent Spring, was closed Friday night so crews could begin work to clear a mudslide. Crews worked through the night Friday until conditions became unsafe to continue.
Afton Police Chief Jason Romberg told SVI News that the mudslide, which had occurred nearly two weeks ago, had gotten worse on Friday with the amount of rain that had fallen. More mud and debris had come down and had begun exposing the town’s water line that goes up the canyon to the spring.
According to Romberg, it remains unclear how long the canyon will remain closed. Town officials are assessing the situation on Saturday.
