Road conditions have been challenging in the area over the past week and adding to that have been limited visibility which was a factor in an accident on US 89 south of Smoot. It was also a primary factor in a crash on Highway 237 on Monday, January 15, as thick fog descended on the area.

Sub-zero temperatures combined with the natural thermal springs in the area and caused a thick fog.

“It was extremely thick,” stated Trooper Todd Baxter with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. “Basically zero visibility. One driver was too close behind the other and rear-ended it.”

No injuries were reported and one citation was issued. One vehicle needed to be towed away while the other was capable of driving away. The WHP and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office had the road closed for approximately 45 minutes.

Trooper Baxter reminds area drivers to adjust for the existing conditions.

“You are thinking you’re good driving the speed limit but you need to make those weather adjustments. That speed limit is for ideal conditions.”

The WHP, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Star Valley EMS responded to the scene in temperatures well below zero.
