Seussical Jr. Comes to the Ford Theatre this week

• Over 60 children will fill the stage

A total of 64 local children age 6-16 are presenting “Seussical Jr.” in the historic Ford Theatre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 27-29 at 6 p.m. with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday. “Seussical Jr.” is a collection of characters created by Dr. Seuss in a story that brings human awareness to the value of each individual person and their uniquely beautiful qualities.

“We’re really excited about the production,” exclaimed Tina Crowther. “Anybody who loves children’s literature and knows the famous Dr. Seuss stories will enjoy watching the show.”

With three children on the technical crew, the entire show is produced by children. All the singing, acting and technical work is offered by children.

“It’s a unique show, in that it’s almost all singing, except for a fun Dr. Seuss rhyme here and there,” said Crowther. “I think it’s going to be a great performance to bring younger children to come see. The main message of the play is ‘a person’s a person, no matter how small’ and as we use our brains, or imaginations, we can be happy no matter the circumstances we face.”

The Arts Council nearly opted for a different format of the camp this year, due to insufficient funds. One anonymous business donor offered a matchable donation up to $4,000. Friends and family of the Star Valley Arts Council rallied in generous support of the youth program, and the council ended up raising nearly $3,800. With the match,it became possible to produce “Seussical Jr.” and save for another season.

Crowther is certain that the public will thoroughly enjoy their evening exploring the magic of Dr. Seuss through music and dance.

“And, how can you resist celebrating this many kids who worked so hard for the last three weeks,” Crowther mused. “I’m so very proud of them and their efforts to pull this production together.”
