Golf team priming for successful 2024 season

No other outdoor sport has to battle quite like golf. The elements can be cruel and unforgiving and the opportunities short. That’s why with the month of August starting this week, there is no time to lose for a program that will see their season end before October.

“We start on August 12 which is our first day of tryouts,” said head coach Kelly Fullmer. “We have a tournament that week and then we are right into it. We have four regular season tournaments with the conference in Casper and then State is here in Star Valley.”

With the new Average Daily Membership (ADM) figures determining where schools fit into a new classification structure there is an added wrinkle for Star Valley Golf as their season is the first through the gates of the format. This fall, with the exception of football which follows its own protocols, all schools with an ADM figure of over 700 will be 4A in all sports and activities. This has generally been the case for SVHS over the past few years but the difference with this new structure is that there is not an even number of schools in each conference.

For example, the 4A West has eight schools and the 4A East has seven this year. With only the top four teams earning a trip to the State tournament, it will be even more difficult with this format. Add to that the fact that Afton’s Valli-Vu course is hosting the State tournament on September 20-21 and it would be disappointing indeed for the local teams to not qualify.

“We have to beat out more teams but that’s how it is,” Fullmer added.” We’ve had a lot of kids playing in the Idaho tournaments this summer. Jordyn Horsley has done very well.”

Horsley teed off this week at Soldier Hollow in Utah as part of the Wyoming State Golf Association team for the Girls Junior America’s Cup.

“She’s getting the attention she deserves with the work she’s put in,” Fuller added. “She will certainly be one of the top female players this season. We have four other girls coming back as well and we are building around her this year.”

The Braves lost a trio of good seniors including PJ Horsley and twins, Brigham and Benson Ordyna.

“The boys lost some good seniors but gained a couple too and I think we’re looking pretty good,” Fullmer added. “My goal is to make sure we have our own teams at our own state tournament. We have a task ahead of us but we’re hoping be there. Aiden DeCora and Sean Stout are our returning seniors. Deegan Hill is a freshman but he will be varsity for us most likely. Then we have about four players vying for two spots so it should be competitive.”
