Independent Notes: Elected office is not a glory job. It’s about work!

This is one of many personal vehicals worn out in public service. I ran this old Dodge Durango up to 300,000, most of it in public service trips around Wyoming. It’s old and tired, but still runs but I’ll probaly retire it from the Cheyenne-and-back one day trips. I’ll miss the array of high beam lights on the front. They have saved me from more than one late night critter encounters in my state travels, both domestic and wild. I’m not sure they are legal, but they keep me safe!

First of all, I thank all those who have taken an interest in serving.

It’s Election time — whoever wins whatever office they are seeking –I simply ask that they “pack the water” for our schools, towns, county and state.

Serving in office isn’t just about attending a meeting and casting a vote.

It’s about doing everything possible to seek a solution to help your respective areas and sometimes that requires endless amounts of time and yes, some personal expense.

I have experienced that. When it’s time to go to the county seat in Kemmerer, the state capital in Cheyenne and yes, even D.C. for the help of the federal delegation — then do it!

I’ve slept on more than one plane making a run into D.C. through the night, visiting the proper people, and then returning that night.

And, there have been many  naps at the Kemmerer Port of Entry because I couldn’t make the over-and-back trip to Cheyenne in one day to see a state  official or state agency on a constituent matter or matters related to my schools, towns and county. (I always want a little rest before I make the final Cheyenne run through wildlife country between Kemmerer and  Star Valley.)

Elected office is not a glory job — it’s a roll-up your sleeves and go to work, at all levels assignment — school board, town councils, county offices and state offices.

Don’t leave the work to staff. The elected official needs to sacrifice their time, abilities and personal means to get the job done.

At the Legislative Level we have a Legislative Service Office. I use them for legal counsel, but I’m the one that puts my shoulder to the wheel for the work that’s necessary.

For those in office and seeking office — Plan to work!

It’s about serving Star Valley and Lincoln County at all levels.
