The Box-H Park in Fairview is launching its fall drive-in movie series Thursday, September 12, showing Disney’s beloved film “UP,” sponsored by The Bank of Star Valley. With a newly installed 30×50-foot screen, and sound available by AM/FM radio, the Box-H offers a traditional family activity that is unique in Star Valley.

“We’re looking to make this a tradition every Thursday night of June and a series [of three or 4 showings] in the fall,” said Emily Martin, Box-H Representative. As a non-profit, the Box-H works to generate funds for park maintenance and improvement through donations and fundraising activities. “These drive-in movies will help us continue to make improvements at the park.”

Guests for movie nights will be charged $20 admission for each vehicle – no matter how many people are in the car. Licensed to accommodate up to 100 vehicles, the park will provide a QR code for guests to learn what is available through the concessions and the FM radio station that will broadcast sound for the film. “You provide the audio for the movie in your car or on a portable radio. It doesn’t work to use a cell phone and stream with a radio app because of the delay. You will need an AM/FM radio.”

The Box-H started offering the drive-in movies in the summer of 2022, and found some success, but the lack of appropriate equipment to support the screen prevented a consistent offering. This spring, the park received a new baseball backstop that supports the new, larger screen, and the drive-in has returned.

Additional films scheduled for showing include “Remember the Titans,” sponsored by B&H Auto, on Thursday, September 19 and “Hotel Transylvania,” sponsored by Point S, as the Halloween feature on Thursday, October 3. Concession choices include popcorn, boxed candy, cotton candy and beverages. During the summer, root beer floats are also available, and in the fall, hot chocolate is offered.

Watching a movie under the stars looks different for every vehicle. “Some people bring an inflatable mattress and put it in the back of their truck,” said Martin. “Some people bring lawn chairs and sit next to their vehicle and some people watch from the inside of their car as well. You can choose the experience that you want to have.”

Martin is grateful for the community support that the Box-H receives through the help of sponsors and volunteers. Staffing for these events is entirely volunteer. It takes about 20 individuals to successfully host a drive-in experience at the Box-H. Anyone willing to support the Box-H by volunteering would be greatly appreciated.

“We have brought back to life an activity that was dying,” said Martin. “We have brought it back to life and it’s available in our community. There are so many people who have never even experienced it. They don’t even know what a drive-in movie is. Come down and experience it, because it’ll be something that you love.”
