• Golfers in Casper to compete for state berth this week
While two-day tournaments are a staple of are golf teams in the fall, this past week the Star Valley and Jackson Hole high school teams met in a dual for the third year with one round in Teton County and another in Lincoln County.
“This past week we battled Jackson on the Snake River Sporting Club course on Wednesday and Cedar Creek at Star Valley Ranch on Thursday,” replied head coach Kelly Fullmer. “On the first day at the Sporting Club, we partnered up a Brave and a Lady Brave to play against a Bronc and a Lady Bronc. They played best ball on the first nine holes and alternative shot on the next nine holes. The next day, we paired up each SV golfer against a Jackson golfer in straight up match play. We awarded points for match wins over the two days and came out on top.”
While the casual fan may not think much of getting time on area courses, Fullmer points out that it can be tricky in some communities. A dual can help alleviate some of that anxiety.
“It is difficult to schedule courses for high school meets, but dual matches allow us to request only a set amount of tee time from the courses rather than needing their entire facility for five hours,” he added. “We really appreciate the members at SRSC and Cedar Creek for accommodating us and our neighbors from Jackson.”
While Star Valley High school will host the 4A State tournament in Afton on September 20-21, there is no guarantee that the local teams will be playing. In the Wyoming 4A classification, programs have to qualify for the state tournament and that will take place this weekend in Casper.
“Eight teams will compete for four spots,” Fullmer said. “We are confident that we can qualify for our home state tournament but it will be a battle. The Casper teams have a real advantage playing on their own courses, two tough ones, Three Crowns and Casper Municipal.”
