• Lady Braves split matches at Evanston Border Wars

By Dahl Erickson, SVI Media

The main point of the early matches for Star Valley volleyball over the 2024 campaign has been trying to play larger and different schools so that the program can try and learn and grow as a team. The opening weekend that mind set took them to Cheyenne. This past weekend it was to the Evanston Border Wars where they saw teams from Utah and Idaho and also a few familiar faces.

Overall the varsity squad went (4-4) in Evanston which brings their season record so far to (6-7).

“We are having some flashes of brilliance which makes us excited but we are very up and down,” said head coach Suni Brown. “It’s early in the season so that’s to be expected. We played some of the best and beat some of the best and didn’t play so well at other times. But growing pains are to be expected.”

The Star Valley girls went (2-2) on Friday with losses to #2 Cheyenne East and to North Summit. The squad also picked up wins over Juan Diego and Bonneville.

On Saturday in a battle of LCSD No. 2 teams, Cokeville defeated Star Valley and the #4 team in the 3A class, Powell also knocked off the Lady Braves in three sets.

The squad battled back with wins over South Summit and old conference rival Lyman to wrap up the tournament. Coach Brown says she likes several things so far this season.

“I loved to see the girls coming together more as a team,” she added. “This is a different team and they are growing together. I’m seeing them on and off the court coming together and they are strong when they are playing together.”

This weekend, which had originally been scheduled for the SVHS Invite will now be a trip to eastern Idaho for the Bonneville Invite where the Lady Braves will see a host of 6A and 5A squads from the Gem State. Brown pointed out she’d like to see more consistency over the next week.

“I’d like to see a little more steadiness,” she said. “All teams go through ups and downs and I’d like to maybe keep our downs a little shorter and show more mental toughness. [This Bonneville tournament] is another chance for us to grown and learn and play some 6A schools and be our best. Every team we play is a learning experience and it will be great for us.”
