JACKSON (WNE) — The Town of Alpine will hold a special hearing on Oct. 9 to consider an emergency moratorium on commercial development and annexation requests.
A town Planning and Zoning Commission resolution called for the emergency moratorium, citing the pace of the town’s development and the hope of establishing a more formal master plan to guide growth. The last master plan was updated in 2006.
No formal agenda had been posted to the town website as of Wednesday, but a formal notice for the meeting was sent to the Jackson Hole Daily. It is attached to the online version of this story at JHNewsAndGuide.com.
Moratoriums are not an uncommon tool for small, rapidly growing mountain towns. The City of Victor, Idaho, enacted a hillside development moratorium in 2021, and the Town of Jackson currently has a moratorium on large-scale building in place.
The Alpine moratorium could give the small community time to focus on water and sewer capacity issues, traffic studies and fees that could offset town costs, members of the Planning and Zoning Commission said.
