Braves defense forces five turnovers in 42-7 rout of Blackfoot

Playing their second 4A Idaho team in six days, the Braves held a 14-7 lead over visiting Blackfoot at halftime based on a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown and a wayward Bronco punt which netted them -10 yards to put the Braves inside the 30-yard line.

The second half showcased a dominant and opportunistic Star Valley defense that forced five turnovers including two interceptions returned for touchdowns. Ultimately the floodgates gave way to a 42-7 final score as the Braves picked up their first win of the season.

Wyatt Moore scored three touchdowns in all three phases with the aforementioned punt return, a 28-yard touchdown reception and a 70-yard pick-six.

Tanner Thompson had a beautiful 65-yard pick-six as well and also recovered a fumble.

Chase Merrell had 67 yards receiving and an interception. R.J. Cazier led the team with 57 yards rushing and had a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Dean Shaw was efficient again, going 6/9 for 112 yards and a touchdown to Moore and also rushed for 26 yards.

It was a frustrating night for Blackfoot quarterback Craig Young who finished 18 of 39 for 176 yards and a touchdown but also threw four interceptions. Cameron Lawe led the Broncos with four catches for 73 yards. Carter Cooper had five catches for 33 yards and the touchdown.

The Braves will play their third Idaho team in a row next Friday as they hit the road to face the Sugar-Salem Diggers for the first-ever meeting between the two schools. It marks the first of back-to back road games for Star Valley who will face the Riverton Wolverines on September 14, in Fremont County before hosting Green River for Homecoming on September 21.
