Essential Items for Living off the Grid

Living off the grid means saying goodbye to the comforts our society offers, like fast food, automotive transportation, gas stations, grocery stores, movie theaters, libraries, and more. Still, people do it. For them, living off the grid means saying goodbye to materialistic wants or desires and switching to a life determined by their basic survival needs. If you’re considering doing this, it’s imperative you bring these essential items for living off the grid so that you’re not in danger.

Water Filter

Imagine you’re out in the wilderness. The sun is beating down. You’re hot, tired, and thirsty. The only water source nearby is a lake, but the water is murky and smells funky. What choice do you have? Whether or not you find yourself in this scenario, bring along a water filter. Consider a large, gallon-capacity water filtration system for your shelter as well as portable water purification tablets for on-the-go travels.

Portable Generator

There are many reasons people might want to live away from society. Crowded urban life, dissatisfaction with national politics, or simply wanting to go back to a rustic form of living are all reasons people might live off the grid. Whatever your reason, it’s likely you’ll still need to use some technology for safety, such as a cell phone or radio. Bring a portable generator to charge all electrical devices. There are many reasons people should own a portable generator, but ultimately it will keep your devices charged when you’re away from civilization. Select a solar-powered generator versus a gasoline-fueled one for greater versatility in the outdoors.

Cookware

Even if you plan to hunt and gather all your food, cooking supplies are still an essential item for living off the grid. It might seem tempting to roast game over an open fire or eat various mushrooms and berries gathered from the woods, but you should still have some form of pots, pans, cutlery, and silverware at your disposal to cook, clean, and eat your food. With that said, you don’t need a full-fledged professional kitchen in your shelter either. Just bring however many items you feel you need to live comfortably.

First-Aid Kit

Lastly, bring a first-aid kit. There are no doctors or dentists deep in the wilderness, so it’s up to you to assess your own healthcare. Bring a comprehensive first aid kit. This does not mean buying a kit with only bandages and some ointment included. Instead, buy a trauma bag filled with bandages, medical tape, gauze, ointment, and other serious medical supplies. When it comes to life or death, you won’t regret opting for one of these bags.
