Former UW signal-caller Vander Waal transfers to Idaho State

Vander Waal showed flashes in three seasons as quarterback for the Wyoming Cowboys. He threw for over 1,800 yards and accounted for a total of 12 touchdowns in his UW career.

Former Wyoming quarterback Tyler Vander Waal has announced that he will transfer to Idaho State to join the Bengals.

Vander Waal announced the news via Twitter.

“I had a great official visit to Idaho State University and am proud to say I am officially a Bengal,” Vander Waal’s tweet read, in part. “The relationship I have built with coach (Rob Phenicie) and coach (Mike) Ferriter in these last few weeks has made me feel like family and I look forward to giving them and the entire Bengal community my all these next two years.”

His tweet went on to say that he will enroll in school at ISU on Monday.

Vander Waal spent three years at Wyoming, redshirting as a freshman and playing in 18 games over the past two seasons (13 starts). In his Cowboys career, he completed 169 of 341 passes (49.6%) for 1,822 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also added six rushing scores.

Idaho State went (3-9) in the FCS, ending the 2019 campaign on a six-game losing streak.

He announced his intention to transfer via Twitter on Dec. 17, 2019, and suited up for Wyoming on New Year’s Eve in the Arizona Bowl. Vander Waal did record any stats in the game, which Wyoming won 38-17 over Georgia State.

After starting the 2018 season as the starter for the Cowboys, Vander Waal was benched in favor of Sean Chambers who led the Pokes to three straight wins before breaking his leg. Vander Waal returned to the field for an impressive win over Air Force.

Chambers began the 2019 season as the starter and passed for over 900 yards and rushed for 567 yards and accounted for 17 total touchdowns before going down with a knee injury.  Vander Waal took over the starting job once again with mixed results. True freshman Levi Williams supplanted Vander Waal down the stretch for the starting job after appearing in his first collegiate games against Colorado State and Air Force. Williams started the Arizona Bowl, throwing for 234 yards and three touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown.
