Fresh Air: The Best Outdoor Hobbies to Try this Summer

Though you can’t quite explore the outside world in the way you hoped—with your friends by your side and flying to new destinations—there are still outdoor activities to fall in love with. The coronavirus pandemic has put a damper on summer plans, but that doesn’t mean we’re trapped. In fact, it may be the perfect time to delve into some of the best outdoor hobbies to try. Check out a few of our favorites and see how you can bring new hobbies to life in the great outdoors.

Hiking

Chances are, you’ve already used hiking as your escape from the home, but what if you made it into an actual hobby? You could push yourself to try different trails, drive an hour to experience a new landscape, or even write about all the trails you’ve explored. Of course, hiking is a great way to get in exercise, but you can reap more rewards from it than just movement!

Beekeeping

Beekeeping is an outdoor hobby you can do with the whole family! All you need to do is read up on proper practices, get some beekeeping equipment, and learn more about the bees. Especially with the newfound monster hornet, it’s become even more important to do what we can to protect and save the bees. If that means picking up beekeeping as your socially distant hobby, then so be it!

Gardening

Gardening is another go-to hobby that many people enjoy. It soothes the soul—even digging and pulling weeds act as ways to lessen tension. Many people feel strain while they’re stuck at home; gardening is one activity that can help you counteract that. Not to mention, you can plant fruits and vegetables that you can use in your kitchen, lessening the need for you to run to the store.

Fishing

While you used to go to the lake with your friends, fishing is now a solo activity. However, that doesn’t make it any less soothing—in fact, it probably makes it more relaxing. Pick up your fishing rod and some bait and head to the pond. You’ll get that deep breath of fresh air and your worries from the day will slip away. Once this is all over, you can show your friends how much your skills have improved!

Kayaking

If you’re dying to get out on the water, get your kayak or order one online, and head the calm and quiet waters. As with hiking, you’ll still get a wonderful workout in, but you’ll also feel calm and rejuvenated right when you begin. Getting out in nature is one of the best things we can do for ourselves right now, and kayaking gets you on the water and in the breeze.

Outdoor Photography

Lastly, with all of this time outdoors, why not snap a couple of pictures along the way? You may find that the most soothing aspect of getting outside is taking photos that make the beauty last forever. In addition, this is also a fantastic indoor hobby, giving you something to do on rainy days.
