Friday night sports recap

Star Valley teams were on some of their longest road trips of the season on Friday night as the football team was in Cody to take on the top-ranked Broncs and the volleyball team was in Casper to face the #5 Natrona Fillies.

The Lady Braves picked up a gritty 3-2 win over the home-court Fillies, 25-20, 18-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-7.
It is the third consecutive week that Star Valley has knocked off a top-five team with victories over Thunder Basin, Cody and now Natrona.

Mia Hutchinson led the way with 21 kills on the night. Gracee Cazier finished with 14 and McKenna Frazier had 12.

Hutchinson also had a pair of aces while Amber Milne, Kam Jenkins and Cazier each had one.

The win improves Star Valley to (18-7) overall as they face off against the Rock Springs Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Coverage of the Rock Springs match will be here at svinews.com with Denise and Josh Frazier on the call.

On the gridiron, the Braves and Broncs battered each other amid soggy conditions as the defenses held court for three quarters. The Broncs kicked a 30-yard field goal and the Braves answered with a 40-yarder from McKell Merritt for a 3-3 halftime tie.

The defenses picked up where they left off as neither offense could capitalize on opportunities. Finally the Broncs broke the stalemate after a muffed punt as Luke Talich scored from two yards out. The PAT was blocked by Winston Green for a 9-3 score.

After a Star Valley punt, Talich hit Chaz Cowie on a short slant and he outraced the Braves defense for a touchdown from 48-yards out. The two-point conversion was no good for a 15-3 score.

After another Star Valley punt the Broncs got the final score of the game as Talich ran 43-yards for a score. The PAT made the final 22-3.

The Cody win on their home field snapped a 13-game Star Valley streak in the series dating back to 1991.

The Broncs improved to (6-0)(3-0) while the Braves dropped to (3-4)(1-2). Cody will be on the road at Green River next week while Star Valley will play their final regular season home game against the Evanston Red Devils in a very vital game for post-season consideration.
