How To Help Your Kids Love the Great Outdoors

No matter how old you are, it’s important to get outside and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer. While we understand that as adults, it doesn’t always seem as important to our kids. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways for parents to make outdoor experiences fun. From an afternoon in the backyard to adventurous vacations you’ll never forget, you can instill a love of nature in your kids no matter where you go. Discover how to help your kids love the great outdoors with these tips and ideas.

Rethink Your Pacing

When you hit the trail on your own, the only thing affecting your pace is you. Kids can quickly alter your plans, though. Children—especially younger ones—will move more slowly and tire out more quickly than you and any other adult on the outing. Your kids are also going to want to explore every little thing: the ripple of water in a creek, the specific shape of a funny leaf, the meandering trail of a butterfly. When you’re young, even the smallest details can become magical.

Don’t let the distractions ruin your day; this is how kids enjoy and discover the world for themselves. Don’t be afraid to take it slow. Prepare to keep your itinerary flexible. After all, enjoying the great outdoors is about the journey, not the destination.

Give Kids Their Own Gear

Kids love feeling included. A child who picks out their own hiking boots and gets to carry their own backpack will feel like they have a sense of ownership over the situation. They will then spend time outdoors because they want to be there.

Kids who have no sense of ownership or responsibility, on the other hand, might feel like they’re being dragged along with no say in the situation. Help your kids feel more comfortable and in charge by helping them pick out all the hiking gear they need to stay happy and interested on the trails.

Find Ways To Get Outside at Home

Outdoor vacations are exciting, but they aren’t the only way to help your kids love the great outdoors. Even small moments like helping in the garden, walking around the neighborhood, or playing in leaf piles are good for building an appreciation for nature. No matter what you do outside, the important thing is to find activities that get kids out of the house, teach them to play without screens, and nurture a love of the outdoors in all settings.
