• Back in action after open weekend
The Lady Braves will be on the home court for the next four games as they host double-header weekends in 4A West conference play starting this Friday against Natrona County.
Star Valley will be looking to not only start off well within their league, but also snap a three game losing streak dating back to the season’s lone win against Rawlins on December 20.
This past weekend represented an open schedule for the varsity squad and coach Kade Erickson commented on some of the items that drew the team’s attention.
“A lot of defense,” he replied. “We need to work on that a lot and our help defense has to be a lot better. We also worked a lot on defensive transition to cover the paint and protect the rim. Another thing we worked on was rebounding so we spent a lot of time with different drills. We also worked a lot on conditioning. The girls were pushed to the max for sure. We are wanting more grit and so we are pushing for that.”
The Lady Braves are averaging 33.5 points per game so far this season, led in scoring by senior Emily Dana at 9 points per game. Amber Nelson is second on the team with 7.4 points per game.
The Fillies come into the contest at (2-6) overall while the Lady Braves are (1-7). Varsity tip-time is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Fillies are led in scoring by Brynn Sybrant at nearly 11 points per game in the paint.
On Saturday, the local girls will be hosting Kelly Walsh who are still looking for their first victory of the season with a (0-8) record. Varsity tip-off time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Trojans are led by Kennedy Davila who is averaging 14 points per game and hitting 30-percent from the three-point line.
Erickson mentioned that both Casper squads will have a size advantage over the relatively small Lady Braves.
“They are some of the bigger teams we face,” he added. “We can’t look at their record. Everyone is 0-0. Natrona plays more of a team offense and defense. Kelly Walsh’s offense is based on Davila and we need to try and focus on her. We should be able to compete with these schools so it should be a good opening weekend for us. We’ve also been healthy too so I’m hoping for some more continuity.”
