A crash took place on U.S. 89 near mile post 123 at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday evening. According to information from the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), a northbound vehicle, a one-ton Dodge truck, allegedly fell asleep and crossed the center line. This resulted in an impact with a tractor trailer/semi in an off-set head-on collision.

Upon impact, the semi  jackknifed into a ditch with what was described as heavy front-end damage. The cab and the frame of the Dodge truck were separated on impact with the cab laying on its roof in front of the frame on the highway.

The highway was closed for approximately three hours while officials worked the scene.

The driver of the Dodge was taken by ambulance to Afton with the possibility of being transferred to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

The driver of the semi was taken to St. Johns Health in Jackson with what the WHP described as “less serious injuries.”

As of 4:30 a.m. the wrecker was still on scene attempting to get the semi out of the canyon.

This incident is under investigation by the WHP. Those responding to the scene included Star Valley EMS and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
