NWS confirms another broken snowfall record in Star Valley

The National Weather Service has confirmed that the weather monitoring station in Bedford has also broken a winter snowfall record this year.

The NWS – Riverton Office reported that total winter snowfall for Bedford, from October 1-April 7, stands at 245.3 inches. Over 20 feet of total accumulation.

This breaks the previous record which was set in 1978 when 234.5 inches were recorded in Bedford. Total snow accumulation has been tracked in Bedford since 1976.

“The pattern favored Star Valley and Salt River and Wyoming Ranges,” said the Riverton office of the National Weather Service. “SNOTELS in teh Salt River and Wyoming Ranges were well above normal for early April.”

It had already been confirmed that the Afton observation station reported over 177 inches of snow accumulation this winter, blowing past the previous record of 135.6 inches in 1982. Snowfall reporting in Afton dates back to 1964. This year’s snowfall total in Afton is 235% of normal. Fossil Butte also saw a new record this winter, with 136.89 inches, 193% of normal.
