• Next varsity home event is January 12.

The Winter sports scene gets whipped into a frenzy many times during the month of December only to fall asleep due to the holidays and the break for students.

Now that 2024 is underway, it’s time for teams and fans to shake off the egg nog and get back into the swing of things for a new year and a push toward conference play.

Girls Wrestling:

The Lady Braves get the honor of the first varsity action to start the new year as they will make the relatively short trip to Hyrum, Utah for a dual at Mountain Crest High School on Wednesday January 3. The team will return to Mountain Crest on Saturday for tournament action. The ladies have had a great start to the season having hosted some tough competition at the Lady Braves Brawl and then a trip to Gillette where they won the tournament. They also were at Ridgeline High School just before the Christmas break where they controlled the action against the Riverhawks. The next home event is scheduled for February 1, against Green River.

Girls Basketball:

The Lady Braves (1-6) had a tough start to the season in terms of wins and losses but were very competitive in some hard-fought games, especially at the Flaming Gorge Classic against teams like Skyline and Pinedale. The team returns to action on Thursday January 4 with a full slate of freshmen, junior varsity and varsity games at Soda Springs High School. Underclassmen teams will be in Kemmerer on Friday and Saturday for tournament games while the JV and varsity teams will be back in Idaho for a game at Marsh Valley High School on Saturday, January 6. The next varsity home game will be against Jackson Hole High School on January 19.

Boys Basketball:

The Braves (5-3) are coming off a solid outing at the Flaming Gorge Classic where they combined with a home win to pile up three victories in four contests. They will be back in action on Thursday January 4, as freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads will be in Sugar City for the return match up against Sugar-Salem. Star Valley won the previous meeting 58-49 in Afton. Just like their female counterparts, underclassmen will be playing tournament games in Kemmerer on Friday and Saturday with JV and varsity contests playing at Marsh Valley on Saturday, January 6. The next varsity home game will be against the Eagles on Friday, January 12.

Boys Wrestling:

After going undefeated at the Braves Brawl to start the season, the Braves were at the Pat Weede Memorial in Gillette where they saw teams from multiple state powerhouses on the mat and went (6-3). The team limped into the break with more than a dozen missing action due to illness at the Rupert, Idaho Quad. The team should be much closer to healthy as they return to action this Friday and Saturday for tournament experience at Box Elder High School in Utah. Other wrestlers will be in tournament action at Bear Lake High School on Saturday, January 6. The next home event is scheduled for February 1, against Green River.

Indoor Track and Field:

The first practices of the 2024 season are underway with the first contests slated for January 11 across the region. Star Valley’s first event is scheduled for Idaho State University in Pocatello on Saturday, January 13. The teams are coming off their best-ever combined finishes last season at State where the Lady Braves were the runner-up and the boys were fourth.
