Star Valley Weekend Sports Roundup – Sept. 3-4

The Star Valley High School sports program were all away from home at the varsity ranks and gained some valuable experiences that will hopefully pay dividends as the season progresses.

The Cross-Country team competed at the Cardinal Classic in Soda Springs, Idaho. This event is one of the premier early-season races of the schedule and draws many of the top runners from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

In the boys varsity race there were 32 teams competing with Idaho Falls taking the team title with a total of 91 points. Boise was second with 99 and Preston was third with 123.

Star Valley finished 15th with a score of 388. Senior Johnny Hunting led the effort with a time of 18:22.6, placing him 51st overall out of 230 runners. Freshman Habtamu Wetzel was second for the Braves with a time of 18:33.6.

The Star Valley girls placed 13th overall in a field of 29 teams in the varsity race. Boise won the day with a score of 30. Mountain View (ID) was second with 78 and Preston was third with 133.

The Lady Braves notched 416 as their score, led by a 1th place finish from senior Eve Mavy who ran a 21:06.7.

The JV boys finished 9th with a 244 and the JV girls finished 12th with a 344.

The Star Valley Middle School boys won their race with a score of 73 in a 17-team field.

Football

One week after claimed a one-point victory, the Braves had to settle for a one-point defeat as they came up just short in a highly-entertaining game on the road against the Preston Indians.

The two schools traded the lead several times including in the fourth quarter but the Braves had a PAT blocked as they trailed 28-27 late in the ball game. Star Valley was able to stop PHS with less than a minute to go as the Indian center snapped the ball over the head of the punter inside the 20-yard line. After two plays Star Valley opted to attempt what would have likely been the game-winning kick from 23 yards out only to have it sail wide left. Preston ran out the clock to move to (2-1) on their season. Star Valley fell to (1-1) and will play at home next Friday against the Sugar-Salem Diggers.

Lane Oesch scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground and finished with 42 yards rushing. Conner Hart led the team in rushing with 58 yards and a touchdown. Kaleb Fila compiled 86 total yards and a score as well.

Kort Hilton put together another all-round game as he passed for 97 yards, rushed for 44 more and had an interception on defense.

Volleyball

The Lady Braves Volleyball Team was in Evanston for two full days of work at the Border wards where they saw several teams from Utah and Idaho. Over the course of the weekend, Star Valley faced Grace, Murray, Jordan, Hillcrest, Providence Hall and Waterford.

Scores from the tournament have not yet been posted.

The volleyball program will get to play their first home matches of the season with the SVHS Tournament taking place Friday and Saturday, September 10-11.
