State Track Day Two: Jirak wins the High Jump; Merritt takes fastest 300 hurdle time into the finals.
Day Two of the Wyoming State High School Track and Field championships concluded in Casper as teams battled gusting winds in the Oil City.
In the 100 meter dash, Kammi Merritt qualified for the finals for Star Valley in an event that had East’s Taliah Morris break a record which had stood since 1998 with a qualifying time of 11.68. Morris also set a new overall state record in the 200 meter prelims with a 23.70. Merritt had the second-fastest time in the field with a time of 24.49. Valerie Jirak claimed the state championship in the high jump with a height of 5’ 6” and cruised to the finals in the 400 meter run. Merritt had the fastest time of the prelims of the 300-meter hurdles, an event she won last year as a junior. She will likely dual Sheridan’s Addie Pendergast for the title with the Lady Bronc running for Stanford next season.
The Lady Braves 4 x 100 relay team of Merritt, Catie Nichols, Camryn Mackey and Grace Collins placed fifth with a time of 50.91. The quartet of Alexis Angell, Carlee Angell, Kaitlyn Bach and Gracie Visser placed eighth in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
On the boys side, the group of Cash Bazil, Preston Ross, Smith McClure and Bryson Nield placed fifth in the 4 x 100 relay. The 4 x 800 relay squad of Habtamu Wetzel, Jase Burton, Matthew Heywood and Peter Lorch placed sixth. Khale Clinger jumped a height of 6’ 2” to place fifth in the high jump.
After the second day of scores, the Lady Braves have 23 points which slots them as ninth overall. Sheridan is in the lead with 60 points, followed by Kelly Walsh with 48 and Cheyenne East with 44.
The Broncs are also leading the boys race with 62 points with Cody in second at 49.5. Natrona is third with 37. Star Valley has 25 points which puts them seventh.

In the 1A class, Addison Barnes takes the top time into the 200 meter easy for Cokeville High School. Barnes also logged the fastest prelim time in the 300 hurdles and claimed the state championship in the high jump with a height of 5’ 2”. Mia Dayton and Bryli Groll both advanced to the 400 meter finals with the second and fifth fastest preliminary times. The pair took both top spots in the 800 meter finals with Dayton winning the state championship with a time of 2:24.61.
The group of Cambry Harmon, Layla Brodt, Dakota Vierig and Rachel Thomas placed fifth in the 4 x 100 meter relay while Harmon, Brynn Lyman, Sarah Dietz and Bailey Bird placed sixth in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
Thomas and Brodt finished second and third respectively in the long jump and Thomas also placed fourth in the triple jump.
For the 1A boys, Jack Dayton advanced to the finals in the 100 and 200 meter dash events. Dayton also had the fastest prelim time in the 400 meter run with teammate Drake Plowman the second-fastest. Plowman won the 1A state championship in the 800 meter run as the only 1A runner under two minutes with a time of 1:59.88. Blaze Plowman was seventh in the event.
Andrew Jackman advanced to the finals in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.
Blaze Plowman, Ammon Hatch, Quintan Bird and Nephi Cook placed second in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
The Lady Panthers have a significant lead in the team standings heading into the final day with 80 points. Southeast was second with 57 and Upton was third with 51.
The Cokeville boys are third after the second day with 35 points. Upton is second with 46 and Burlington leads the team scores with 63.
Finally, the Kemmerer Lady Rangers are leading the 2A class with 53 points while Big Piney is in second place with 41. Sundance sits in the third spot with 31.
The Rangers held the 10th spot after Day Two with 12 points. Big Horn High School led the 2A pack with 52, just a half-point in front of Lingle Ft. Laramie and just one point in front of Niobrara County.
