TEXT-IN RESPONSES: Federal Education Funds for Guns?

There are reports Education Secretary Betsy DeVos might let schools use federal money to buy guns for educators.  The New York Times reported Wednesday that the Education Department is considering using a program in federal education law that does not ban weapons purchases.  A loophole in the program that provides grants for school safety would allow DeVos to let states and school districts use the grants on firearms or firearms training.

During the Weekday Wake-Up on the SVI Radio Network Thursday morning, Duke & Dahl asked listeners for their opinion on the issue.  Would you support or not support Federal education funds being distributed to the states for the purpose of buying guns and providing firearms training for teachers?

Here are their responses.

In Favor

“As long as the guns remain property of the school I’m OK with it if they become the property of the teachers absolutely not.”

“Yes, protect our students. Teachers have to be trained.”

“There is no price to high to protect our children. There are those that have more compassion towards taking care of illegals that intend to do us harm than taking care of our Citizens.”

“Absolutely! As long as the teachers are qualified annually to use the firearms. If someone went into my kids school I would rather have them protected by several people rather than one officer.”

“Good idea mostly- at least it’s a start. I would trust our own people to make that decision. Training would be a thing they could finance.”

“Like the idea.”

“I like the vote of confidence. Whether I would move forward with these funds, depends on the fine print.”

“I’m in favor of letting Schools buy guns with Federal money.  Remember Obama used federal money to buy guns to give to the Mexican cartels.”

Apposed

“I say no. I’m for arming teachers if they want to be, but they should be vetted just like anyone else buying a firearm. Just because they are a teacher does not automatically qualify them to own or use a firearm.”

“I’m shocked there are more yeses than no’s on the guns topic, there’s so many things wrong with this. I support teachers having guns under the right situation but using federal funds?!? NO! How do we know if these teachers are accountable? How do we know if their dependable? How do we know THEY are not going to take the kids hostage? Just because they are adults doesn’t mean they’re going to make the right choices. Like you guys mentioned that’s just one layer of this huge topic. One other thing…If federal money is used… will it go to every state?!?!”

“Keep the feds out! I’m sure the schools can afford a firearm and a box of ammunition! I also believe that if a school in certain areas wanted to train a teacher there would be certified people out there that would more than likely donate there time to teach a individual proper training!”

“Arming teachers sounds good in theory.  BUT, is a potential nightmare in practice. Enough said.”

“I thought funding education was always a problem? Spending money on this seem ridiculous. If the Federal Government wants to help they should provide more officers at schools.”
