Weekend Sports Recap

The Star Valley Braves bounced back from a disappointing Homecoming loss a week ago to defeat the Powell Panthers 29-13 on Braves Field in a pivotal 3A West battle on Friday.

Taft McClure threw for 237 yards and connected on three touchdowns from the quarterback position with two of them going to Winston Green. Green added a rushing touchdown and had over 180 total yards and three scores. For the second consecutive game the Braves’ defeats scored a safety.

The Panthers scored just one offensive touchdown which came in the second half on a run from Reed Smith. The visitors got a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown from Sam Whitlock after bobbling the ball back to the 1-yard line in the second quarter.

Star Valley (3-3)(1-1) now travels to the top-ranked Cody Broncs next Friday.

On the volleyball court the Lady Braves improved to 3-0 in the 4A Southwest with a 3-0 win over Green River on the road. Scores for the match were (25-9, 25-18 & 25-17).) The win moves Star Valley’s record to (17-8) overall.

The Lady Braves will be on the road this next weekend as they face off against Natrona County on Friday and then Rock Springs on Saturday.

Finally, the Star Valley Cross-Country team was part of a unique venue as they ran at the Lockhart Ranch in Jackson Hole on Saturday. The Skyline (ID) boys took the team title with 30 points, edging the home turf Broncs who finished with 36. Star Valley was third with 68.

The Braves were led by senior Johnny Hunting who finished eighth with a time of 17:41.0. freshman Habtamu Wetzel was right behind him in ninth with a time of 17:46.4.

The Lady Braves got a third place finish from senior Eve Mavy who ran a 20:15.
