It was a busy week in high school athletics with home games for the basketball teams, road tournaments for the wrestling teams and the first events of the indoor track and field season. Here’s how the SVHS teams did.
Girls Wrestling –
Competing at the huge Tiger-Grizz Invite in Idaho Falls, the Lady Braves placed an impressive second as a team with 142.0 points in the 41-team field. Thunder Ridge took the top spot with 168.5.
Individually, Veil Foreman remained undefeated as the rolled through the 145-pound bracket for the championship. Hallie Robertson (114) and Cashlee Hepworth (235) both made the finals and placed second.
Carlee Angell (100) and Brooke Schwab (165) also made their way onto the podium. The Lady Braves’ next event will be at the end of the month as they compete in the Ron Thon Memorial in Riverton.

Boys Wrestling –
The Braves placed eighth as a team with 118.5 team points in the 28-team field. Post Falls won the event with 208.0 but all five of the top finishing squads scored at least 149.5.
Individually, Tel Parry (138) made the finals and placed second. Ty Thompson (150) placed third with Kimball Parry (120) finishing fourth and Kooper Burk placing sixth.
In the junior varsity bracket, Caisen Miserany (144) and Carson Clapp (175) both won their brackets with Calvin Green (126) placing third. Peyton McMurdo (150) and Nolan Hyde (120) also placed in the JV tournament.
The Star Valley boys will be at the Rock Springs Triangular next week on January 23, before competing at the Ron Thon Memorial on January 31 and February 1.

Indoor Track & Field –
Members of the SVHS indoor track team made their way to Pocatello, Idaho for the Snake River Open on Saturday. The following athletes placed in their respective events.

In addition, Jase Burton competed at an event held at Brigham Young University (BYU) where he won the event and ran a converted time of 9:09.20 and set a new school record for the 3200 meter event, breaking a mark from 1990. Burton also placed second in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:20.63.
The indoor tracksters will next compete on January 31 and February 1 at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.
Girls Basketball –
It was the opening weekend for 4A West conference play as Star Valley hosted both Natrona County and Kelly Walsh over the weekend. On Saturday, the Lady Braves had a rough shooting night as they could not keep up with the Fillies in a. 45-29 loss. Emily Dana led the effort with eight points and nine rebounds. Ambrey Nelson chipped in seven points and Kambree Johnson scored six.
On Saturday, the Lady Braves performed a remarkable 180 after a tough first half in which they trailed 17-9 at the break. In the second half, Star Valley scored 36 points led by Dana who finished with 23 overall. Nelson also finished with seven. The surge helped them pull away from the Trojans in a 45-32 final to help the team improve to (2-8)(1-1) on the season.
The SVHS basketball teams remain at home next week as the host Evanston on Thursday, January 23 and then host Riverton on Saturday, January 25.
Boys Basketball –
It was a pair of intense contests for the Braves who picked up a pair of wins over their Casper visitors. On Friday, Star Valley was able to pull away from the Mustangs in the fourth quarter to pick up a 55-47 victory. Cooper Lancaster led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Shumway added 13.
Saturday’s game saw the Braves fall behind by a dozen points early but battled back to take the lead in the second half. Both squads saw their chances teeter as time wore down with Shumway hitting a go-head three-pointer to put the Braves up 50-49 with just 1.5 seconds left. The Trojans got a key deflection which went into the hands of Jake Nicholls who’s three-point attempts rattled around the cylinder before popping out and preserving a Star Valley victory.
Shumway finished with 15 points and Bryson Nield netted ten.
The pair of wins helps the Braves improve to (3-7)(2-0) overall as they continue on the home court next week.
