The first week of February is gone and that means it’s stretch run time for the wrestling teams and rematch part of the basketballs season moving forward. Here’s a look at how the SVHS sports teams did over the weekend.

Wrestling

In one of the town of Wyoming that reveres wrestling, two of the state’s most historically prolific powers got together as they do each year to do battle on the mat. Star Valley made the trek to Green River to the Wolves Den with both a varsity girls and boys dual on the schedule.

Lady Braves 36  Wolves 9

For the Lady Braves who are gunning for their third straight all-class state title in less than a month, they looked the part on Thursday night as they won by pinball in six of the eight matches on tap for the night.

The Lady Braves host multiple teams in a quadrangular this Tuesday February 11. This is the last home event of the season and the last matches before the girls 4A West Regoianls in Evanston on February 21-22.

The Braves are home on Thursday night as they host the Evanston Red Devils in their final home dual of the season. All Star Valley residents are reminded and encouraged to attend the 4A West Regional tournament which is a one-day event on February 21.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Braves had a split weekend with a Friday night game in Rock Springs and a home game against #5 Green River with Star Valley splitting those games but also showing the rest of the conference they will be a handful to deal with in the final weeks of the season.

The Star Valley defense held leading scorer Emma Asay well under her average as they extended their lead throughout the contest. Emily Dana scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Ambrey Nelson scored 12 points and had five rebounds and Camryn Mackey added eight points.

Wolves 45  Lady Braves 43

Green River jumped out to a double-digit lead with some high-energy defense but the Lady Braves didn’t give up as they clawed their way back to not just tie the game but trade leads with the Wolves four times in the final quarter. Mackey gave Star Valley their last lead on a jumper in the paint but Green River was able to retake the lead in the final seconds from the free throw line.

Dana again led the team with 14 points with fellow senior Kambree Johnson netting ten points and leading the team with seven rebounds. Sophomore Morgan Magee chipped in six points as Star Valley out rebounded the Wolves 33-20 to keep themselves in the game.

Star Valley now hits the road for the Casper double-header as they face Kelly Walsh on Friday night and Natrona County on Saturday afternoon.

Braves: 71  Tigers: 55

The Braves are the hottest team in the 4A West as they ran over both squads from Sweetwater County in their weekend. On Friday night it was a career-best effort for junior Cooper Lancaster who was unstoppable on the Tiger court with 34 points. He also added a team-high four assists in the effort. Bryson Nield scored 12 first-half points  and Dylan Shumway added 11 as the Braves broke the game open in the third quarter.

Star Valley out-rebounded 4A’s top rebounding team by double digits, 38-24 to help pace the effort. Zane Hedges led all rebounders with 11 and Nield added seven.

Wolves 36  Braves: 68

On Saturday back in the friendly confines of the Crimson Cathedral, the Braves made short work of the visiting Green River Wolves as they jumped out to a 19-8 start. The lead swelled to over 30 with three Star Valley players in double figures. Shumway led the team with 18 points including four three-point baskets. Lancaster finished with 15 and Dayton Schwab notched ten points in just his second game back after missing most of the season with injury. Roman Erickson added high points off the bench. Star Valley again dominated the glass with 35 rebounds.

The Braves will try and keep their seven-game winning streak rolling as they face off against the Trojans and Mustangs this weekend.
