• Growing the sport with weekly practices and the 2025 shoot and shop weekend
The Wyoming Desperados Mounted Shooters (WDMS) is quickly gaining a reputation for hosting some of the best shoots in the country. This year marks the fourth collaboration with Utah Mounted Thunder, further expanding the club’s reach in the mountain west and providing more opportunities for local riders to compete. The club’s growth is reflected not only in the increasing number of competitors but also in the quality of the events it organizes.
The club embraces partnering with other clubs and organizations to make events the best they can be for those in attendance and for those who participate.
WDMS Secretary Lisa Grimsley embodies the fact of Wyoming being the “Cowboy State” with her passion for the sport. She shares the goal of the WDMS to “create a memorable, sustainable, and long-term event that is family friendly, appeals to many people’s interests and has the potential for growth.”
The Wyoming Desperados Mounted Shooters are hosting weekly practices every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. until dark at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. Practices will begin next week and will run through September. This is a fantastic opportunity for local riders to get involved in mounted shooting, whether they’re seasoned competitors or newcomers to the sport. The practices are open to all, and spectators are welcome to come and enjoy the action.
For those interested in the sport, Grimley encourages you to “come and ride with us.” All ages are welcome to participate.
The biggest event on the WDMS calendar is the 2025 Shoot and Shop weekend, set for August 22-23 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. This event will feature mounted shooting competitions, along with a vendor market opening earlier in the evening as WDMS partners with the Star Valley Street Market. The market will include booths with local goods, crafts, food trucks, and more. In addition to the competitions and shopping, there will be live music, a car show, and plenty of free entertainment for the whole family.
“We always partner with local service organizations,” Grimley emphasizes. This year, monies will contribute to a scholarship with the highlighted event being Willie Lawrence Memorial Shoot.
As the Wyoming Desperados Mounted Shooters continue to grow and expand their presence in the mountain west, their commitment to building a supportive, family-friendly community around mounted shooting remains at the heart of everything they do. Whether you’re looking to compete, learn, or simply enjoy a fun, action-packed weekend, WDMS invites everyone to join in the excitement. From weekly practices to the free-to-attend 2025 Shoot and Shop weekend, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get involved and experience the thrill of mounted shooting.
