Families throughout Star Valley and surrounding communities are invited to the Town of Afton’s annual Freedom Festival all day on Friday and Saturday, June 27-28. With a lineup that offers something for everyone, folks will want to spend all day in town.

Lisa Grimsley, who serves as Tourism Director for the Town of Afton, told SVI Media that the festival is a “family-friendly community event that draws people to the downtown area and has a broad appeal with interest for all age groups.”

The festival opens on Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the rodeo arena at the fairgrounds with the annual Junior Rodeo. Little cowpokes will spend the day vying for honors in contests such as barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying, calf and steer riding, bareback and saddle bronc riding, junior bull riding and mutton busting.

Grimsley added that town officials have prepared a “fantastic, friendly, fun, welcoming, well-orchestrated event” for Saturday that will “keep people in town all day with bouncy houses and over 40

vendors lining Main Street.”

Saturday’s events begin with a 5K run from the Elkhorn Arch and continue with six to eight bounce houses on Main Street, Wagons and Tails Heritage Corner, a fish scramble, a cornhole tournament, and the Linford’s offering live music that evening.

Folks interested in competing in the cornhole activity can expect $2000 in cash prizes from the double elimination tournament. Registration is open from 2-3:30 and the competition begins at 4. Offering three divisions for folks of all ages, including ages 10 and under, ages 11-15 and 16 and up, the tournament is sure to draw families and friends of all ages and skill levels. For more information about the tournament, folks can contact Justin at 307-887-3707

“People have worked to the best of their skill set to plan this festival, and it’s going to be a very polished event,” Grimsley concluded.

Salt River Symphony and Chorus to deliver pops, patriotic concerts

The Salt River Symphony and Chorus are each presenting a concert in the following week. The Symphony is scheduled to perform their 2nd Annual Pops Concert in Afton’s historic Ford Theatre on Saturday, June 28 at 2 p.m. The chorus will offer a patriotic collection of pieces on Monday, June 30 at 7 p.m. on the Thayne Community Center stage. Both productions feature local musicians and vocalists.

“Get out of the heat by coming into the Ford Theatre during Afton’s Freedom Festival,” said Charity Williams, Associate Director of the Salt River Symphony. “Attendees will hear patriotic music like an armed forces salute, pop music including well loved music by Queen and movie soundtracks featuring the jazzy main theme from ‘The Incredibles.’” This music will appeal to audiences of all ages.

Additionally, the Salt River Chorus has prepared a concert of patriotic favorites. “Come and enjoy many of your favorite patriotic pieces, including ‘God Bless America’ and ‘My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.’ Make note, we will be in Thayne at the Community Center” for this concert.”

Come and enjoy these two classic presentations honoring America on her birthday! Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted.
