Conference realignment dollars up next in the process

• What will departing MWC teams get to pay for their move?

For more than a month, representatives of Utah State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Colorado State have been in mediation with representatives of the Mountain West Conference in mediation talks to determine final dollar amounts for the five schools to join Washington State and Oregon State in their Pac-12 conference.

Those dollar amounts could ultimately cost each school somewhere between $15-$18 million each. But the television partners and revenue from a new deal are starting to be announced by the league which could give the schools a clear view of just what kind of upgrade they are potentially making.

On Monday, the Pac-12 announced that CBS will continue to be a main broadcaster for the schools as part of several other smaller networks to provide coverage. It is still unclear what this means in terms of the amount, but initial estimates have schools earning anywhere from $7-$11 million annually.

The potential monies from the Pac-12 to the MWC in poaching fees are still in mediation as well with the payout possibly being as high as $55 million.

Also expected to be announced this week is at least one new member for the Pac-12 with wide speculation across multiple sources that it will be Texas State. The Pac-12 needs one more full time member by the time they commence operations with their new members on July 1, 2026.

As for the Mountain West, they could also act soon to bring Grand Canyon University, an announced future member, into the fold as early as this upcoming school year. There are still questions about whether the MWC would add any other members but once the litigations and mediation are completed, there are rumors of such schools as North Dakota State for football and potentially others.
